Michigan is a State located near the great lakes and in the mid-western part of the United States. Detroit is the largest city in Michigan with Lansing as its capital. The word Michigan is a French word ‘Mishigamaa’, which means, “large lake”. Four of the five great lakes lay alongside Michigan forming the longest coastline in the world. That coastline comes from the two peninsulas Michigan has. Upper Peninsula, and Lower Peninsula which has been noted to take on a mitten shape. The Mackinac Bridge connects the two Peninsulas.
Michigan has the longest coastline of fresh water in the world. This makes Michigan a leading recreational boating state in US. Michigan has 64,980 inland ponds and lakes, which makes anyone in the state never further than 6 miles away from natural water source!
Michigan is characterized by a diverse economy and is known to be the center of the automotive industry in the United State. Three major automobile manufacturing companies are all located within the Detroit metropolitan. Upper Peninsula is sparsely populated, but it’s an economic hub being a tourist destination. Lower Peninsula is the center of high tech-industry as well as manufacturing services. Grand Rapids, Michigan in particular is a very popular tourist destination with tons of events and activities throughout the city.
