Alabama is a great state, rich with culture and history! Alabama has many different nicknames including the Yellowhammer State, (which is Alabama’s state bird) the Cotton state, as well as the “Heart of Dixie” which is what Alabama is as. Alabama played a huge roll in the Civil Rights Movement back in the 1960’s as well as a roll in space and rocket technology working alongside NASA in Huntsville, Alabama. Birmingham in particular is the largest city (population wise) in Alabama which grew from the, steel and iron manufacturing industry. Birmingham served as the industrial forefront for the South.
Because Alabama played such a large roll during the Civil Rights Movement, there are a lot of historic people from Alabama! Rose Parks is one figure that comes to mind who refused to give up her bus seat to a white man. This even sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott which eventually forced Montgomery to integrate their bus system.
If you’re not much of a history person, there’s tons of things to do in Birmingham! Take a nice stroll around one of the many state parks. Oak Mountain state has some very scenic views and it’s nice to get out and walk around every now and then.
